A Patellina foraminifer viewed with differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy, which highlights the intricate patterns of its mineral shell, or test. Foraminiferans extend fine, branching pseudopodia- strands of living cytoplasm that form a web outside the shell- to capture food and move across surfaces. I only rarely find foraminifera.
