This euglenoid’s bizarre, squeezing movements are called metaboly: waves of contraction and expansion that deform the entire cell. Its flexible outer covering allows it to twist, stretch, and squeeze through tight spaces and debris where flagellar swimming- the usual way it moves through open water- is less effective. Collected at the boardwalk in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
